Crime is down, but thefts are still high

Original post made on Apr 13, 2015

Crime is on a downward trend in Mountain View, but that isn't stopping thieves from burglarizing homes and businesses, according to a police department report on 2014 crime statistics. And while its a tricky business finding the root cause of crime trends, police say it might be state laws fueling the fire.

It's alarming to have so many thefts. Awareness is very important and is key in preventing crime. Thefts are preventable if property owners were more aware of the activity in there neighborhood or area of business. Crime is not totally preventable and thefts are crimes of opportunity. When something gets stolen or burglarized it is due to the availability of the subject at hand. Thefts are bound to happen. However the opportunity given to a thief or thieves is the determining factor in the events of theft. I grew up in Mountain View's North Whisman neighborhood which has changed in many ways in the past fifteen years. Crime was at a high rate here in past years with theft being at lower rates. Violent crime and drug related crime were much more common in those years in North Whisman. The streets are safer now.

There has always been thefts in Mountain View. There is more now because the value of the items being stolen are high and the demand of the item alows for a profitable market. I've lived in Mountain View for 27 years and thefts are alarming. When I was a child growing up in the North Whisman area drugs and violence occured as frequent as thefts. Overall I think Mountain View is much safer than it was in the past twenty years and prior.
