It's official: Google takes over Moffett Airfields, Hangar One

Original post made on Apr 2, 2015

It's no joke: On April 1, a Google subsidiary formally took control of Moffett Federal Airfield and the iconic Hangar One as part of a 60-year lease deal with NASA.

"Takes over" is the operative phrase for Google in MV!

I hope Google provides some support to the Moffett Museum and Historical Society. Web Link It is adjacent to the hangar. No mention of it in this piece. It is a wonderful collection maintained by very dedicated volunteers.

Good. Let's hope the feckless boobs at NASA get out of the way of the project to restore Hangar 1

@LoveYourDNA: Right. That spending of billions for minimal private return certainly sounds evil.

Some people are never happy and distrust everything.

Is Moffet Field open to the public? I understood it is, but I don't know how this changes with Google running things. And what am I meant to say at the security gate? I'm just coming into the facility because I want to?

I'm over Google. FedEX tried to get into Moffett Field for years and was declined, yet now Google owns Mountain View. I find this whole privatization of public property unacceptable. Google treats Mountain View like their private playground without regard for it's people. The planes they bring in and out of there are horribly loud, a nuisance that diminished to almost no air traffic in past years.

Yes Mver- evil describes this abuse of public property.

MVer,

To get in the gate, just show your driver's license or other ID and say you're going to the museum. The museum is fortunate to have bunch of avid volunteers who have done a bang-up job with the displays. It's right next to the hangar, so if you've never been close to the hangar, you're in for a breathtaking treat.

This is a great, great thing that Google is doing, and the restoration of hanger one is something that I have always hoped for. All you complainers just go back to the dark recesses you came from because Google is the best thing ever to happen to bring back growth and viability to this area. If it wasn't for them I am sure that at some point hanger one would just go the way of many things and become just level ground. Kudos for Google and the city of Mountain View.

Sure, Google has done some good for the town, but the downside has been immense...

I don't see the immense downside, unless you think just one company is responsible for the growth issues MV is facing. That would just be scapegoating though.

The downtown area is vibrant and booming where it once was a revolving door of one crappy restaurant replacing the previous crappy restaurant. - Jobs

Tons of start-up businesses in town. - Jobs

Lots and lots of commercial construction. - Jobs

Lots and lots of residential construction (more would be good). - Jobs

7,000+ (non-tech) Facilities, Services & Support jobs on the Google campus alone.

Millions donated to local charities, and schools (more if you count volunteer time by Google employees).

Your home value likely remained static, if not increased (most did) during the housing bubble crash.

Yeah...having Google in town...what a drag.
