Pedestrians...please stop, look and listen. Web Link Every day I see people step into the a crosswalk wearing earbuds, texting and not even glancing at oncoming traffic, this applies to people of all age, but teenagers/younger people are the biggest offenders. You have to assume that drivers do not see you and that they are likely to be engaged in phone call looking at at their GPS or worse yet texting. And whatever traffic engineer thought it was a good idea to give drivers a green light (to turn) while pedestrians get the OK to Walk was an idiot.

At the majority of stop lights in Mountain View, car drivers are allowed to turn at the same time that pedestrian are allowed to cross. Car drivers have to understand this and watch for pedestrians even when they have a green light. That is the law and should be common sense.

This is the same as the majority of the stop lights in California. People need to pay attention.

And driverless cars as well- I saw one of the Google cars almost hit a dog turning on to ECR from Shoreline. Luckily one of the passengers took over and jammed on the brakes.

If people slow down they will have time to react to sudden surprises like a pedestrian not paying attention. Even if all peds were 100% careful at all times, the problems on the road would still persists because of the speed issue with everyone zipping around and racing each other to the next stoplight. I know this is a pipe dream, but if we all drove at or under the posted speed limits EVERYWHERE, accident rates would plummet and the community would be safer. This would be the number one factor in making the roads safer for all: driver speed.

Hey Kathy who taught you how to drive? My dad taught me it's always the drivers fault, regardless what the pedestrian, or traffic layout. Therefore always drive the speed limit and drive cautiously. You must be an aggressive driver. You know, I don't want to be the one hitting the person with ear buds on, or texting or for whatever reason not paying attention. I guess I don't understand your logic,.

I agree with Kathy in terms of pedestrian behavior. Too many times I have seen pedestrians walk in front of cars without looking. Its not always the drivers fault. Just this morning on Castro, Several cars stopped to let pedestrians walk across Castro. As the cars started to pull forward , here comes an idiot riding a bicycle across the cross walk like he has the right of way and then proceed to ride on the sidewalk of Castro. Completely illegal. He is lucky he is still alive for now, but wouldnt be surprised if he is an accident waiting to happen

When a car runs down a pedestrian in the crosswalk, it is always the drivers fault. Even if the pedestrian did not look.

Why are you attacking pedestrians? Did you hit-and-run someone while texting and are trying to fend off a lifetime of guilt? Please surrender your drivers license and get a bus pass. We do not need you behind the wheel of a car!

One day we'll have recording devices in our cars that will report what the driver's speed was at the time of the accident. That's when drivers will understand how effective slowing down is wrt accident avoidance and how the law view their actions. Drivers control their cars and who their cars hit. Period and end of story. If you cannot control your car WITHIN THE LAWS OF THE ROAD, then you are what is wrong with our roads.

First of all, stop giving Kathy a hard time. She is only saying that pedestrians that are crossing in the crosswalk ALSO need to watch out for cars. I saw a young girl RUN out to cross the road and didn't even look. How can a car see that person coming? I just think with all of the people texting/talking on phones/listening to music on earbuds, need to pay more attention when they are around vehicles on the road. I ALWAYS watch for pedestrians. It doesn't matter if I have the right of way in my car or not, but if I don't see them coming until it's too late, that is something I won't be able to control..
