The problem of domestic violence is a very important one. However, your sentence "there's always a need for clothing, bedding, towels, household items, pots and pans, games and toys" may not be entirely true.
I called the YWCA and asked to donate, and they said that they will only take new clothing. This was a real disappointment; I would think women who are suddenly homeless with their children and so in need, would be grateful to get clothing.

It would be wonderful if the Y has changed their policy and is now accepting used items for donation.
