Free RotaCare health clinic still in demand

Original post made on Dec 26, 2014

Despite an increasing number of people with health insurance because of "Obamacare," Mountain View's free health clinic hidden in the basement of the YMCA building near El Camino Hospital is still having to turn patients away who are unable to get care anywhere else, says RotaCare executive director Mirella Nguyen.

Maybe its hard to get a new doctor at El Camino Hospital but I found one pretty easily last spring at Stanford. I only had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment with her and in the mean time I was able to see a doctor at the Express Care clinic the next day who took care of my immediate need until I could get started with the primary care doctor. This fall my doctor moved to a new office in Los Altos, on San Antonio just south of El Camino. I've seen several doctors there now and I'm very happy with the Stanford Hospital system.

Dear MV and Palo Neihbors,
We were happy and sad at the same time to read this article. It's something we have known for two years. For those who still don't know Neighbors Helping Neighbors, NHN, we are a local service provider filling the gaps in basic needs of 'middle income' folks who have no 'safety net'. And we also fill some gaps for low & no income folks. In addition, we help both middle and low income navigate other social services.
There is a larger gap in Covered CA then has been revealed. In our opinion, even reported gap is too much.
Of our clients 90% pays for Covered CA but only 5% of those folks are actually receiving medical care. The other 85% are in financial crisis because the are paying premiums & co-pays they can not afford. Plus, they are going without medical care eventhough their paying medical premiums for both Covered CA plans and or Med I Care. It's a horrifying gap to be in.
Right now is 'flu and cold' season, NHN has a large number of clients with chronic conditions who are getting sick but lack access to care.
Our Covered CA powers to be must find a way to close this gap of those who can't afford the plans and those who are paying and still do not receive medical care.

Like Rota Care, NHN client rosters are growing too. We all b ees to be part of the solution. NHN recently conlude a successful series of Community Outreach Events in Palo Alto and Mtn View (Sept-Dec,2014). Covered CA, was our special guest for two dates. Some folks were helped but others remain in the gap.
We hope to have Covered CA back for our 2015 Community Outreach Events.

We applaud and support Rota Clinic. Besides food, clothing, shelter & transportation, medical care is a 'basic need'.
Please let's focus our resources on those in those gap.
Sincerely,
NHN Core Team

"The shots she got for free at RotaCare for her newborn daughter were worth $900. "

The shots were likely worth $9. Somebody is making a few bucks here.

@Steve -- It's called the free enterprise system. The same free enterprise system you usually like so much, remember?
