City buys land for park on Wyandotte Street

Original post made on Dec 18, 2014

The city is moving quickly to purchase the vacant Robalee Kennel at 2254 Wyandotte Street in order to build a mini park. On Tuesday the City Council unanimously approved spending $2.6 million to buy the .89 acre site, formerly a space for the boarding of cats and dogs. It sits in the middle of a neighborhood that is one of the city's most undeserved in terms of park space.

$2.6M for .9 acres in an industrial area? Is the plan to buy more of the area around it? I do see housing across the street, and about a block off to the west, but this really looks like an attempt to throw money to shoe-horn in a public space into the middle of an very industrial area.

With average costs per 1 sq foot lot size in this area going for about $1200 (varies of course, but a good est), the complaint about cost is unfounded.
The owner could have probably gotten MUCH more from a private party or developer.

This area has been identified for years as one of the most in need of a park.

"Acquire land in the area bounded by Highway 101, Rengstorff Avenue, San Antonio Road and Middlefield Road (preferably adjacent to the City-owned parcel at the corner ofWyandotte Street and Reinert Road) for development of a mini-park."

I'm guessing you meant "underserved" and not "undeserved."

Great news-- every parcel the City Council can snatch up for parkland before it becomes a mega-whatever is a major coup for residents. I've been so pleased with Del Medio and Mariposa parks and I hope this one will be as nice. Suggest the city visit Sunnyvale's new Seven Seas park for inspiration.

Isn't this right across the street from another park? The one that never has anybody in it?

Thanks for the correction, UT, and mea culpa. It's now fixed.

At least they're not wasting money chasing the siren song of so-called "affordable housing". We need peaceful open space far more than more high density substandard apartments.
