Life-saving devices installed in Mountain View

Original post made on Nov 17, 2014

A nonprofit committed to saving lives by installing portable defibrillators in public spaces is making its mark on Mountain View this month as part of a pilot program to bring more than 40 Auto External Defibrillators (AEDs) to locations all over the city.

Wonderful to have the defibrillators! But why 3 at the high schools? Wouldn't it be better to spread them around at other locations?

Robert is a registered user.

An article in this weeks Voice, page 8, announces the location of Auto External Defibrillators in Mountain View. There is a small map showing their locations around the community. I went on line to www.racinghearts.org, the maps source, and found the map to be slightly inaccurate. In our neighborhood, the AED’s are currently located at the city’s MOC (their gym & main office) and at Gold Star Gymnastics. In those neighborhoods that have schools, the AED’s are located there as well. So you can see that the lack of a neighborhood school has impacts on a neighborhood that extend far beyond the classroom.

Stephanie Martinson has done an amazing job of getting these life saving devices in place in these communities. It all started with a simple idea she had and she has pursued it relentlessly (in a good way!). These communities are better off for her efforts.

Get MV Public Library on the Map! It would help immensely to install an AED there and more places on Castro Street other than City Hall, with street placards or advisory signs.. Grocery stores and pharmacies seem to be likely locations.
Schools don't seem to be primary go-to locations for AED's unless they have high-exertion sports programs....

celiabella- The high schools are large facilities and to be able to respond quickly, they were placed at various locations throughout the campus as recommended by guidelines from oversight organizations.

PhilC- We do have one at the library! It is located on the first floor in the lobby, across from the welcome desk. The map provided in this article only lists the new AED's that were acquired as part of this program. There are actually 30 other AED's already in City facilities and vehicles.

To gain a better idea of where all of the AED's are in the city we recommend that residents download the Pulse Point app. The app uses location-based technology to alert CPR-trained citizens that someone in their immediate area is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The alerted CPR-trained citizen finds that person and may begin resuscitation until emergency responders arrive. It also allows you to know where AED's are close by your location and throughout the City. If anyone has additional questions about AED's, the Pulse Point app or their locations, please feel free to contact me at Jaime.garrett@mountainview.gov.

Why is there a AED at the teen center but not at the senior center?
Senior center is the most obvious place in town to put one.
