Teen center debuts in Mountain View

Original post made on Nov 13, 2014

The grand opening of the new Mountain View teen center is set for Friday, Nov. 14, but kids took a tour through the still-under-construction site last Friday to get an up-close sneak peak of the new facility.

Congratulations to all involved in this 10 year effort, especially to the youth leaders and the adult leaders from Peninsula Interfaith Action whose faith-based community organizing got this effort started and kept it moving forward. I hope that the View will be a welcoming, supportive and fun place for local teens.

I think this is an inappropriate use of city funds. The City of Mountain View is not a social services organization. The only purpose of local government is to maintain common use infrastructure and basic services such as sewer and garbage. Social services like a teen club are better left up to social organizations like churches and fraternal clubs, not governments.

This article fails to mention what the cost of maintenance of this club will be. How will it be staffed. What sort of security will be on hand.

@chas -- Your sort of libertarian thinking is great in theory. In actual practice? Not so much.

The city of Mountain View is to be congratulated for doing something that is actually beneficial for a segment of the population that usually gets left out when it comes to city services.

Delighted to know that this facility is now available to youngsters in our community. I do hope it draws them in and off the streets.

I've often wondered why Mountain View didn't have a Boys and Girls club? and now I think we've got one from and for our community.

The sour grapers like chas need to rethink their idiotic no public funds for community needs of youngsters like this. Very myopic and very stingy. I suggest you move to Mississippi.

Good post Maher -- except for the point about Mississippi: They actually do have public services, limited though they may be.

For those who hate governmental services of all kinds, I suggest that they move to Somalia, the libertarians' ultimate paradise.

Great center. Good architects (I know Marty from the Graham Middle School projects). Fine civic investment.

Got to like those politicos like Bryant & Means. Always on the same wavelength - right? On some issues, the provision of services does not relate exactly to citizen VOTING. Last time I checked (Nixon administration) those under 18 didn't get to vote at all. I'm over 62 - and get to enjoy the lovely-newish senior center. Lots of VOTES in that demographic category.

I spoke to a proud mom whose kid has been working on this for 10 years. Now - are these kids going to be ready for the leadership of tomorrow - or what?

I'm very happy to see this finally open. Thank you to all who made it happen. This is a great opportunity for the youngsters in our community. To the few who opposed - we have a well-run Senior Center in MV that offers all sorts of games, crafts and classes. Don't you think we should be spending at least as much (if not more) on our future generation? I think so, it's about time.
