Huge campaign-funding discrepancy in water board race

Original post made on Oct 7, 2014

Two candidates vying for Palo Alto voters in the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board race are spending vastly different sums of money on their campaigns, with the challenger, Gary Kremen, outspending incumbent Brian Schmidt by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maybe the difference in spending should tell us a lot. I for one am tired of only having rich people in office.

I would still vote for the best candidate regardless of how rich they are. Income is a correlated with skill level and human capital.

"I for one am tired of only having rich people in office." Who is the incumbant? Agreed with best candidate...

OK--so some have more money than others---Why not tell us about the platforms as well. Your comment is purely biased. What they spend or have is immaterial. What they propose is crucial.

Come on MV Voice - what a poor article! Are you suggesting that we base our votes on the contributions or material wealth of the candidate? You've included no relevant information regarding the candidates stance on the issues. Very disappointing journalism.

I remember in grade school, there were some kids who just wanted to start a fight between others. Not be involved in it, just start it.

Any voter who ASSumes he/she is immune to high velocity/ high cost PR campaigns bought by big bucks is truly brain washed by godknowswhat. The rare thing is when the best candidate with less funds wins a campaign where the opponent out spends the "best candidate" on PR adverts.

So I find many of the evasive stances about the corruption implicit in campaign financing disparities a terrible proof that voters have lost sight of major dynamics that operate in politics in this country,

The point of the article is to raise a flag up the pole as a warning about the unlevel playing field in these races. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GARBAGE.

248K is a great investment for Gary Kremen, as stated on his website, garyforwater.com , he is "Chairman of WaterSmart Software. WaterSmart produces the Home Water Report, inserted into the bills in the City of Palo Alto, parts of Mountain View and more than 20 other cities." It would seem this position of influence on the water board would have payback, what is potential ROI on that 248K?

I only care about the issues. After Brian Schmidt did not stand up for us at Cuesta Annex and refused to listen people in our community, I stopped supporting him and I am an environmentalist.

Also this article concerns me on the tax we pay in the Voice as well Web Link as well as this conflict of interest by Brian - Web Link

What people do with their money because they are passionate about the issues is their business.

Could the two candidates release their water bills? It'd be interesting to see if they walk the talk on water preservation.
