Censorship Strikes Again in Mountain View

Original post made by Jim Neal, Old Mountain View, on Sep 25, 2014

Last week, a man was arrested for allegedly attempting to destroy a Pat Showalter sign after he was confronted by a courageous Ken Rosenberg. This was an attack on the first amendment rights of candidates and their supporters to express their opinions openly, regardless of any other underlying motivations.

So far, about half of my campaign signs have been stolen, and other candidates have reported having the same thing happen to them. However, what I was told yesterday was even worse.

I went into Ava's market and as told by the owner, Juanm that my signs, along with those of Lisa Matichak were taken down because a customer complained! Make no mistake, I have no problem with Juan making a decision about what, if any signs he wishes to display or not display in his store. My problem is with the person that seemingly thinks that free speech stops with them, and that no one else is entitled to express a point of view, or simply to participate in our Democratic process by displaying candidate signs. I find these tactics of intimidation to be reprehensible and I hope that the Voice will be as vigorous in chasing this story down as they did for the phone survey that was far less egregious than this action.

First Amendment doesn't apply to people stealing signs or whining about what is in a store window.

Pretty basic stuff. Thanks for the hyperbole though.

The first amendment applies to all speech involving government. That includes political signs. There is also the fact that other laws were broken as all the signs are on private property (trespassing) and cost money (theft). It is not hyperbole that a store owner was pressured to remove a sign just because someone may have disagreed with a candidate on an issue; or perhaps because of the candidate's gender, or race. The suppression of political or other speech is censorship and these Chicago-style tactics have no place in Mountain View.

In Palo Alto, the so-called "sign-gate" created a firestorm over a single stolen sign. The attempted destruction of Pat Showalter's sign resulted in an arrest, but if 50 signs are stolen and a store owner is intimidated, that's OK because of who the candidate is, or their gender or race?

The government didn't force the store owner to remove anything. People stealing or vandalizing or knocking down signs isn't a violation of the 1st Amend.

I think you're digging yourself a hole here. The application is for government interference with "free speech."

Some clown stealing signs is not the government. This is pretty basic knowledge. If you don't believe me, you should file a civil rights lawsuit against every homeowner and shop that refuses to put up your sign.

Even better, go to all the law offices in Mt View, and tell them they have to put your sign up or you'll sue them for violation of your civil rights. See how far that goes.

If people want to support this kind of dirty politics, then I probably can't talk them out of it. For my part, I have been and will continue to run a clean campaign. My campaign is 100% funded by Mountain View Residents, 100% of my volunteers are Mountain View residents, and 100% of my endorsements are Mountain View Residents or Mountain View Small Business Owners. This was a conscious decision on my part because I want to represent the residents and local business owners not special interests. I imagine this to be the real reason that such tactics are being used.
