Bridging the digital divide

Original post made on Aug 26, 2014

Computers and mobile devices are turning into a staple school supply for kids in the Bay Area. The new requirement for all Los Altos High School students to bring a laptop or Chromebook to school every day indicates schools here in Mountain View are no exception.

There are plenty of computers at the libraries that can be used, by all status classes.

I got Comcast internet for 14.99/month for a year, and this article is telling me Mountain View and Los Alto folks can't afford something like this? But of course the same families can spend 80-100dollars on TV to watch soccer sports? Or buy 12 packs of beer daily. I don't believe this story at all, it's a ploy for sympathy. The POOOR Children.

Right, because most families leave TV and beer budget decisions to their children.

If you want to rectify the former you must educate the latter.

@Hmm (example of beat-up-the-poor-and-huddled-masses negativity?) I prefer the poet's view of that!

Comcast Internet is $10 per month for school families that qualify for Economically Disadvantaged status. (+ $100 towards laptop/netbook). Neither of the School Boards (who all got a message from Comcast) has discussed this on an Agenda or bothered to implement this. Why? I'm a MVWSD Board member - And I don't know why the majority (or Administration) in not interested. This money is required by Comcast's past corporation 'public good works' projects required by their past corporate mergers (less competition - require more public benefit). For MVWSD there are 40% of the Middle School students who qualify. About the same # (20% of enrollment) in the MVLA district.
This is a public benefit entitlement for the Taxpayers - a good question for The CANDIDATES! (MVWSD & MVLASD). Why is this $$ being ignored?
