Stanford professor wins highest award in mathematics

A Stanford University professor today became the first woman to win the highest honor in mathematics. Maryam Mirzakhani was one of four mathematicians awarded the 2014 Fields Medal at a meeting of the International Mathematics Union in Seoul, South Korea.

I second Kathy's congratulations. When I read this story today I sent it around to lots of folks who are interested in girls and women in STEM. Everybody I've heard from is thrilled at this news. Thank you, MV Voice, for letting us know about this.

I think I took a partial differential equations class from Prof. Cohen in the 70's. He wasn't a great teacher, but he gave me a B, I don't know why, I had no idea what I was doing.

Hopefully the now generation super stars like Prov. Mirzakhani will do a better job with teaching so our engineers will be better at competing globally.

Mathematics is a cornerstone of science and engineering progress.
