Linkin's advocacy of photo's with a job search is disturbing. It was made illegal for employers to require them since minorities and women so often ended up instantly in the wastebasket or "in our files". And, of course, today everyone is a "minority". Do the people advocating this have any idea how hard won it was to get rid of that nonsense? For only a few jobs like modeling, where you market your appearance, is your appearance relevant. If a photo does get attention it may not be the attention you want.

We really need the idea of a 'social contract' at work, where we gather every day for basically the employer's purposes and to work. We should be able to work cordially with people we might never meet otherwise or people we would never make actual friends with. It is true that with 'flattened' organizations work groups are doing their own hiring off a short list. They are often hiring the best people within social criteria. Avoiding really toxic people is a necessity, but hiring social peers doesn't help that goal.

It is possible for a flattened organization to decay to id's running wild in unstructured roles. In that case Agile engineering may become an exercise in male primate behavior. But that apparently doesn't happen very often and reflects poor management. Today most people can afford to choose a perceived more professional work environment. If one can't afford to choose, then working hard towards the goal of finding a better place and not being contentious is a decent plan.

In any case, ditch the pictures..............
