It's a good thing a gun wasn't available to the assailant. Dead people would be part of this story. Guns kill more easily and quickly than other weapons.
320M guns are in private arsenals in our 325M population. Easy access to a gun is why so many of these mass killings happen with guns. The school killings were with guns from private arsenals.
Most private arsenals do not have any real security to prevent easy access cuz the gun addicts' paranoia demands easy access. 1,000,000 guns are stolen each year from private "collections". They can then be sold without documentation at most "gun fairs" to other "collectors".
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the connections between lax gun owners and guns popping up wherever.

Happily, this assailant didn't have access to a gun.

If he wanted to kill, he could of killed with the knife just as easily. Or don't you know that knives can kill? Not just Guns. Cars can kill. It's not the weapon they use that is the problem, but the people behind the weapon. A killer will use whatever is at hand.

There are not 1,000,000 firearms stolen each year in the United States from private collections. In 2012 there were 190,342 lost and stolen firearms nationwide(source ATF) - some percentage of those were recovered; I'm not sure how many, but historically it has been around 20%.

Furthermore you cannot sell a firearm at a "gun fair" without a background check. That is just pure nonsense. I am personally sick and tired of the anti-second amendment lobby spouting lies, plain and simple, to further their agenda.

Regardless, I am fairly certain that stolen firearms are not sold through legal channels. Furthermore, you could (try to) confiscate all the guns in the US and you'd still be able to obtain them on the black market. Kind of like drugs - They are illegal, yet they are readily available. Where there is demand, there will be supply.

As a previous poster pointed out, it's not the weapon that is the issue, but the person that will use it nefariously.

Look at the Swiss, just about every household has an honest to goodness assault rifle (ie select fire) and/or pistol, and the crime rate per capita is dramatically lower than in the US. So it isn't firearms that are the at the root of the problem.

Unfortunately those who wish to disarm the American people will harp on and on about gun crime (which is actually substantially down per FBI statistics), but completely and utterly fail to recognize that firearms are used in self defense between 500,000 and 3 million times per year (source The Institute of Medicine, the National Research Council, and the Centers Disease Control.)

Steve - you left out important details about Swiss gun laws. Guns are issued as part of a "well regulated militia". These men go though special training and I'm sure are registered with the Swiss government as they are considered an extension of the military. They also are not allowed to keep ammunition with them in their homes, just the gun - one gun. Their system is completely different than ours, and much better run and organized. I would strongly prefer we use their system over our chaotic "own whatever guns and ammo you want" system.

Please don't use their system to justify ours, they are completely different. Looks like the "pro-second amendment group", if that's what you want to be called, also is capable of twisting the truth in their favor.
