Day Worker Center Needs Donations for Kitchen Renovation

Original post made by Jim Neal, Old Mountain View, on May 21, 2014

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Kitchen Renovation fundraiser at Morocco's for the Day Worker Center which provides many services. I had the opportunity to speak with the Executive Director, Maria Marroquin about the Center and the reasons for the fundraiser.

First though, I want to tell you a little bit about the Day Workers Center. Many people only know that it matches local businesses and residents with people that are seeking daily employment. However, the Day Worker Center does much more than that.

Among the services they provide in addition are:

o Donations to the Lucille Packard Hospital at Stanford of hand made blankets for premature infants
o Hosting blood drives four times a year
o Acts as a conduit for city services and agencies to communicate with the Latino community
o Assists senior citizens with community gardens
o Helps coordinate and participates in community events
o Provides ESL classes to workers that need them
o Provides free weekly medical visits by the Garner Health Services mobile van and much more!

Until recently, the Day Worker Center was also providing meals on site but the city found their kitchen to be in violation of several codes and shut it down. In order to resume this vital service, the Day Worker Center needs your help. They are aware that with rising rents, food and fuel costs, many people in the community are themselves struggling to make ends meet; but for those who are able, they are asking that you donate what you can so that they can make the necessary renovations and bring their kitchen up to code.

They need to raise $100,000 for the work to be completed and have held the Community Yard Sale and the Morocco's fundraisers. However, they won't be able to raise the money they need without your help too! Even if you can give $5 or $10, it will put them that much closer to their goal and allow them to resume a vital service for those in need.

Please do what you can to help. To donate, please click on the link below:

Finally, I would like to thank the Day Worker Center, the volunteers, the workers and everyone who has supported them for all the great work they have done so far and extend my best wishes for continued success in the future.

A BIG THANK YOU to those that have already given what you can! For those that have not yet been able to and would like to, The Day Worker Center Can still use your help.

There are lot of places from where you can get donations for the kitchen renovation. Also I would like to suggest that you visit Web Link for checking out the kitchen material.

Thanks Linda! That's a great suggestion and I will be sure to pass it on to the Day Worker's Center!
