Original post made on May 7, 2014

A protest of Arizona Sherriff Joe Arpaio's visit to Mountain View turned strange on Tuesday when the controversial man approached protesters who said his policies amount to "hate."

Oh yah, with all the whoopla about the mtn lion I totally forgot this clown was in town. Bad news for a guy who feeds on publicity ;)
He's trying to make a last buck before he dies, selling pink underwear to the few true believers he still has. Its kind of sad. He doesn't seem like a happy man in any respect...just bitter and spiteful, selling pink underwear to a few people along the way.

There are better ways to handle immigration issues. Those who are for total amnesty and those for deportation without exception are both wrong. This issue is a case by case type of problem with each individual having their own story that needs to be heard. With this said it is not right or fair to let people break the law and work the system to stay here. What do you say to those who spend years trying to become legal citizens while others just sneak in and stay? How many of these people are willing to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and put their nation of origin second to the US? Those who spend the time to be legal citizens seem so proud of their accomplishment while those who are illegal want the benefits without the loyalty. Maybe countries like Mexico need to become the place their people would want to stay in with the needs of the citizens not only taken care of, but instead of mass exoduses due to dire circumstances, the people are not only proud, but happy and healthy and prosperous.

Robert is a registered user.

I feel that the Voice has reached a new low in biased journalism. A classic "are you still beating your wife" hit piece.

"He was trying to provoke us by being confrontational-- that's his personal style I guess," said Maria Marroquin, director of Mountain View Day Worker Center.
I would say that showing up to protest at an event is confrontational. How much tax money does the Day Workers Center get? Public funding for an obviously political organization is not permitted.

"Our strategies for community are better than his strategies for hate," said Claire Ryan, a Santa Clara University student who was holding a banner that said "No human being is illegal."

Enforcing the law is not hateful, but I guess if you are a criminal, you could see it that way.

"His thing was that (immigrants) were wrong for coming here illegally," said Mountain View resident Marilu Delgado of Arpaio's remarks to the crowd.

I guess that sums it up.

Illegal immigration is labor arbitrage, plain and simple. They aren't "immigrants" at all. They are SCAB LABOR.

An interesting piece. I have a slightly different perspective. Joe was not being confrontational in the literal sense. More than half of the demonstrators showed up after he met with them, which disappointed him. He likes to engage the demonstrators. I know when we protest Hillary or Obama they don't come out and talk to us.
Daniel, when you quoted AP it almost appeared that you quoted me. Also he was talking to the inmates, not the AP.
"It's 120 degrees in Iraq, and the soldiers are living in tents — and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths."
— Arpaio to inmates living in tents that reached 138 degrees during a heat wave. July 25, 2003
Joe is a tough guy but enforcing unpopular laws is a tough job. He believes it should not be nicer in jail than it is out of jail. He always encourages dissatisfied inmates with this advice, "If you don't like it here, don't come back."
Go Joe

Classic. If you have no real argument for your position, you can always reach down in the muck and pull out the race card.

People who are for illegal immigration intentionally and conveniently drop the "illegal" part when talking about illegal immigration. In their twisted logic, people who are against illegal immigration are against immigration and therefore are racist.

While Sheriff Joe may be a publicity hound, many people including myself share his belief that everyone, people of all stripe, should follow the law including immigration laws. No one group of immigrants has the right to cut in line ahead of any other immigrants.

Two reasons why Arpaio should not welcomed in any American community:

1. In none of the 30 or so in which the County has paid significant judgments or settlements or awards ws any detention officer ever investigated or disciplined by the Sheriff. But all of the detention officers involved have received promotions after the deaths.

An example of such a death. Brian Crenshaw was serving a short sentence for shoplifting. He was legally blind. Crenshaw refused to show his ID in a lunch line and Sheriff’s deputies pushed him to the wall, punched and kicked him, and placed him in lockdown. For the next six days, nobody entered or left his cell.

Crenshaw was found unconscious with a broken neck, several broken toes, and extensive internal injuries. He was comatose, his intestines had ruptured, and his vertebrae needed to be straight-ened with a halo. Doctors told Crenshaw's mother that his internal injuries were so severe they had to surgically open his stomach to relieve swelling. He died as a result of injuries that had been untreated for six days.

The family sued and the lawsuit against Arpaio and his office resulted in an award of $2 million plus gargantuan attorneys’ fees. In an all too typical pattern, Arpaio's office destroyed evidence in the case, making it more difficult to prosecute. Web Link

2. In the jurisdiction served by Arpaio, violent crime rates increased 58%. But in all other areas crime decreased: Phoenix 14%, Mesa 31%, Scottsdale 15%, Tempe 26%.

There are two hundred other good reasons not to welcome Arpaio anywhere at any time.

Why is it the same people are against "illegal immigrants" are not against illegal guns? They are happy that our mayor won't join MAIG, but spout vitriol against "illegals" and worship anti-constitutional sherrifs.

Any one against illegal immigration is a true American in my book.

They take away union jobs, charging way less whereby screwing the average joe out of major contracts.

@Why,

"Why is it the same people are against "illegal immigrants" are not against illegal guns? They are happy that our mayor won't join MAIG"

I can think of one reason. MAIG is against legal guns. Everyone is against illegal guns.

Where is the usual local P. D. support? I guess they do not want to be caught looking the other way while Illegal Aliens commit felonies. Sorry Joe...

Well since the SEIU is one of the most vocal backers of illegals, talk to them

man, i hear all these "americans" bellyaching about these "illegals" taking their jobs. Why dont YOU go work minimum wage or less? Know why not? Because YOU are lazy. On one hand you yell out "free market!" and "supply and demand!", yet having "illegals" come over and compete with you for jobs is as open as it gets!

Did you know that farmers have to let crops rot in the field because they cant get enought workers to harvest them? Even the "illegals"! So, get off your lazy "legal american" butt, get down to the central valley and break your back picking fruits and nuts! Or go clean out a toilet.

Lazy!
