It's nice again to see that Salman Kahn and his 'out of the box" approach is again getting national recognition. From such a powerful status quo player!
It will be extremely interesting to see how the Common Core assessments (Smarter Balanced) are going to do higher level thinking responses (written text explanations) when even the College Board is unable to do that successfully with essays. "Showing work" was always an extremely important part of higher level problem solving. Show an outline - tell different approaches. There are many responses to a writing prompt that can show if a student is prepared to think (or is starting to think) critically.
Too bad we can't easily measure that [seems to take rubrics and well trained humans].

Computers are already replacing lawyers in the discovery process. Should be possible for them to evaluate written test responses.
