MV police arrest ex-teacher in underage sex sting

Mountain View police have arrested a former San Francisco teacher after he allegedly attempted to arrange to meet with a minor for sex.

I'm curious - what is the age of consent in California? I assume there would have been no crime if the "child" was 18 instead of 17.

How is what this man did different from Woody Allen dating 17 year olds?

I agree that a 50 year old man dating a teenager is creepy, but when does it become a crime? I thought the age of consent was 16, but I guess I was wrong (fortunately I am not attracted to 16 year olds).

I looked it up. The age of consent is 16 in most US states, but 18 in California and a few others. In Woody Allen's New York, the age of consent is 17 so he is safe (on this issue at least).

I wonder what exactly they did to make this fake kid stand out. Hard to imagine out of every person on 'social media' this guy randomly found the decoy
