According to the Project Loon web site (Web Link the balloons float at an altitude of 20km (65617 feet), not 20,000 feet (which is definitely not "twice as high as planes fly"). Large airliners typically fly at around 35,000 feet except for very short flights.

I don't see "20,000 feet" in the article, Scott, so they may have already fixed that mistake.

As WIFI is line of sight it does not penetrate through roofs, walls and foliage so I doubt this will be any better than the failed Google Wifi project in Mountain View.

WiFi is one of the components of electro-smog. We're covered by this electronic radiation smog 24/7 already. This loony project seems to basically cover us with an umbrella that rains down much more powerful smog than we have from base stations, access points and cell towers today. What the $%!@?

what if the signals emmmited from the wifi ballon interacts with the airplanes signals...isnt it danger????
