Were you there or are you just repeating the wording off the press release. There was little change in the numbers as Safe Moves did little to implement change in behavior. They just rewarded the kids who live close to school. Announcing a day and rewarding everyone who shows up to school on foot or bicycle does little to take kids out of cars.

It's still a lot more safer to drive then to walk or bike. Even if the parents do not know how to drive safely around the schools.

When I was a kid I was never driven to school. I'm curious, what has changed? It would be hilarious if everyone drives their kids to protect them from everyone else driving their kids to school :-)

40 years ago most kids rode the school bus to school. That's probably the 20 percent of morning traffic now. Wouldn't it be less expensive to fund school buses again than all the things we do to try to reduce traffic?

I'm all for creating safe walking and biking routes to schools (and throughout Mountain View, for that matter) but I'm quite skeptical of the figures Safe Moves used in their press release.

"20 percent of all morning traffic is caused by parents driving their children to school." 20% on what roads? On the local roads leading to our schools? On all roads in the area? On the freeways too? I could see the figure being 20% on local roads, near schools, for the 1 to 2 hours around school start times... but I seriously doubt that 20% of the traffic on, say Central Expressway, or 101, or even El Camino in the whole morning is school drop-off-related. Probably more like 2%.

There are more kids & people now. Things have changed. Some days traffic is crazy. Just drive slow & leave early. NO BIG DEAL. Some ride bikes or walk. Most drive. It's nice to see 'anything but a car' day! Other schools in the area also have 'take your bike to school day'...not just Graham. Nice to see & should be fun for kids :)
