When I moved out here in 2006, this particular "news" outlet was maintaining that the TCE plume was limited to Moffett Field and a result of US Navy activity, which would've exempted the mess from EPA regulation. Now we hear it's the Whisman Triangle, Evandale, and Leong Drive, and it's the obvious suspects, the early semiconductor industry. It seems quite likely that the entire neighborhood over by Whisman and Tyrella is utterly contaminated with the outrageously potent carcinogen, TCE.

I wonder about Shockley's old lab on San Antonio, right by that glorious new piece of overdevelopment you've built. Is that silly horror at San Antonion and El Camino built on TCE contaminated ground?

There is no interest in finding this out. If a homeowner tests for it and it comes back positive, then their house value will ***plummet***, since they will have to disclose it when they try to sell.

Likewise, businesses and even the city has to be careful, because if they test for it and it is present, then they (and we) will be liable.

It's interesting to note that even if the toxin isn't below your property, it percolates in gaseous form miles away. All those lovely utility pipes (the gaps between the pipe and settling soil) provide a nice little conduit for this carcinogenic badness...

We really do need to finally test the whole Whisman/Ellis/Middlefield/Moffett Blvd area to finally find out just how widespread the problem is in MV.

We need to test an area outside the known permitter and then do tests toward the known plume until we get toxic readings so we can get an accurate toxic map once and for all.

I thought Old Ben was moving out of MV? He kept saying how he couldn't wait to move in a previous post. By his admission he's only been here since 2006 which explains why his posts lack the clarity of historical knowledge. I hope he stays. I like the grumpy gus character he's cultivated here.

I do wonder how extensive the pollution in this peninsula is, and I'm certain that your real estate is utterly worthless. Who wants to live on a toxic dump? That's clearly what Mountain View is. In fact, it's beginning to look like the whole daned Peninsula is a toxic dump. Witness the Sims fire just the other day. Is that really enhancing your real estate?

More and more, living here spells CANCER.

I love Mountain View! There is just more people, what do you expect? This little city is getting bigger :) We must take care of it. But it is NOT a toxic dump! Could be worse. Glad they are on it.....
