Yes. This has become an increasingly common crime with so many driver's thinking of "Me First" and "Outta my way". When they run over an old woman, their level of selfishness goes off the charts into a near inhuman ability to have zero compassion or care for the person you just ran over in your car.
It sickens me, but seeing the rudeness of so many drivers on the road, its not surprising at all; not in the least. Some people simply turn into egomaniacle lunatics when they are behind the wheel. We need to be less free with our giving of licenses, as MUCH more willing to take them away from those too mentally imbalanced or simply to frail in their egos to be driving around the rest of society.

Any kind of car-vs-pedestrian collision can be life threatening. Leaving the victim in the street without trying to help them should be considered attempted murder.

Let's not get carried away with accusations of murder. That crime implies prior intent. Hit and run is a felony, which is extremely serious and should lead to adequate punishment if forcefully prosecuted. Trying for other charges like murder might end up with a not guilty verdict, which would be the worst outcome.

I have avioded using this intersection for 30 years, even when driving. It is so wide, and so busy. With stoplights at Middlefield (100 feet away)most pedestrians can safely cross. The extra steps are worth it.

We must remember that in a car/person confrontation, the person is innately at major risk. That said, the person also has the responsibility of being aware of where s/he is when crossing a roadway and how to do it safely. I am so sorry for the person who lost her life and for her family. Let us remember there is a word and it's called "accident" which refers to when a person unintentionally (car/person/animal) is in the wrong place or makes a mistake in judgment. Accidents happen. Why are we so quick to judge who is to blame when every situation is unique and it could happen to anyone. And, in fact, it will.

If the driver had stopped to help the victim, then I might believe it was an accident. Leaving the poor woman alone in the street after hitting her is not an accident and needs to be prosecuted with the same vigor and with the same penalties as an attempted murder.

Anne Poul kicks off the blaming of the victim even earlier than expected. In the Netherlands the law blames the car driver in all cases because they should know when they start their car that they are endangering pedestrians and bicyclists. Here we seem to think that 77-year olds should somehow have the capacity to keep themselves from getting run over by careless and unfeeling drivers. Very few car crashes are true "accidents". Most could be prevented if the drivers were more careful, but people like Anne Poul don't want to hold drivers accountable for their actions so there is no reason to be careful. If you run over someone, just keep on driving.

* No, this could not happen to anyone. Yes, accidents happen, and I can understand how an elderly pedestrian might be hurt jaywalking there. (There is no marked crosswalk there and, because San Luis ends at Rengstorff, no implied crosswalk either.) But you're forgetting something much more important than assigning fault for the accident: the driver didn't stop. I find it hard to believe that an alert driver wouldn't have even noticed the collision. When you hit a 77-year-old pedestrian, you have a responsibility to check on her safety. To not do so is a felony.

With any luck, the victim will be able testify against the driver and put him or her in prison.

A lot of hit and runs are due to illegals without drivers licenses or insurance that don't want to be caught and deported.

"Rengstorff and San Luis" -- yeah, I'd bet my last Peso this was an illegal.

Hit & Run should be a death penalty offense.

There needs to be some cross walks here. The City needs to inspect this area and make some necessary adjustments. People park so close to the end of the street, one can't tell if someone is walking at the intersection. There should be at least, minimum of 50 feet where cars can't park close to the intersection. This is a no brainer, but we may need more deaths to make this happen.

Lets not start the blame game, because when people are using the streets, everyone should be aware of their surroundings, both drivers and pedestrians.
