"what's being done to protect our privacy and civil liberties?"
Nothing.

According to our President there's nothing to worry about.
We can just carry on with our lives while the government monitors every phone call, email, and letter (yes they are even tracking old fashioned snail mail) in the United States.
The day has come when we are afraid of our own government. A government that is supposed to be working for us. Doesn't feel like that anymore does it? Sort of feels like we're working for them?
We, the people, are in charge of this country. We just elect people to help run it. They are supposed to represent us, not lead us. We lead ourselves.
