what about flashing 'cats eyes' lights on the crosswalk too?

The city said that they wouldn't install flashing lights on the crosswalk since drivers will be coming to a complete stop and will be able to see pedestrians easily without the need for any lights or raised crosswalks or anything like that.

When they put up the traffic counters, more than a few locals I spoke with said they were driving over them as many times as they could per day to ensure they had enough traffic to warrant a stop sign. I guess it was sort of a underground movement by some in the neighborhood. Good job! Now I can turn onto Phyllis from Hans w/out crossing my fingers that a car doesn't zoom up on me. It makes the intersection easier to negotiate as well as slowing all the crazies speeding down Phyllis to Grant.

Make sure you look both ways before crossing the street. 95% of accidents can be avoided if people just pay attention.

In my experience, car drivers do look for pedestrians near the curb. The ones they miss are coming the other way and are already more than half way across the street when they get nailed. Most streets do not have medians where pedestrians can wait for traffic on the second half of the street to clear. Drivers need to put their cell phones down and check both sides of the crosswalk before proceeding.

Remember drivers, to comply with the law, your wheels must stop rolling entirely before you proceed through a stop sign. If this does not happen, you're just as bad as the bike riders who roll stop signs...worse actually, because you can do so much more harm as exemplified by the death involved on this particular corner.

Pedestrians must also be cautious. I cross El Camino and see people stand at the curb edge only inches from the street while waiting for the light. Cars are passing at 35 mph are only a foot away (no curb parking). That include you with the baby carriage one slip and you in the street!

Its a much better intersection now.

Agree with "Make sure you look", and here's why: I stopped at another crosswalk yesterday where a woman was crossing with a baby in a carriage. The woman was looking down at her cell phone while she crossed the street, then she put it in pocket once she hit the sidewalk. WHY? Why would anyone do that? If it was important text, then read the text before or after crossing, not during! Another time I stopped for a pedestrian who was reading a book. That person did not stop walking, did not look both ways but just stepped into the intersection looking down at their book. Whatever happened to "look both ways before you cross the street"? I had that rule mastered by age 4!

For every one story like the above, there are 100 drivers driving over the posted limit, rolling stop signs and not using turn signals.
Everyone's got a gripe about the other guy.
Back to the ACTUAL TOPIC: There's a new stop sign in town. Users, be aware and stop completely, per the law.

I don't care who has the right of way or who is right and who is wrong!
The car is bigger and should be respected as lethal force.

When it take $20 to get a license, its russian roulette everytime you cross a street or use a sidwalk or ride a bike.
IMO, if you get hit crossing a street, you didn't look hard enough.
People in other countries seem to understand that, they have a healthy fear when using a crosswalk.

Here though, there are a thousand laws that the ped / byciclist is always right and feels invincible.

Oh, the driver has to yield, well that worked well.

When I was taught how to drive, I was told to drive defensively.
When I walk and what I teach my kid about walking: Assume that every driver around me is a moron!!

Yes, until drivers learn how to obey speed limits and other rules of the road like yielding to pedestrians, everyone must be on guard and watch out for them. They _will_ kill you. They _are_ dangerous, and some have the mentality of "Get out and stay out of my way" (You can se this attitude in some of the posts above.
Thanks to the MVPD for continued traffic enforcement. It will help drivers understand the rules and obey them. Hooray for the victory of a new stop sign!!!

Well, if this morning's commute is any indication, it looks like many drivers need a lesson on what a stop sign means. The 2 cars in front of me rolled through the stop at about 5 mph. When I made a complete stop, the driver behind me honked. Expect a cop here pretty soon, especially as school season approaches. We're almost there, just need some highly visible examples of police enforcement and we'll be good to go. It worked well on Shoreline. Driver's habits have improved with respect to looking for peds. In about 30 mins I bet the tickets can cover the cost of the new signs.

"He should change" - I was not making a gripe about the other guy. I am BOTH driver and pedestrian in my 100% true 'story'. I look both ways before crossing AND I stop my car at every crosswalk where a sign is posted or a pedestrian is crossing. My point was - Stop sign or not, pedestrians need to be beware. Don't assume that by posting a sign, you are protected by a magical forcefield. I worry more about errant pedestrians because the consequences to them are far more life-and-death serious than to bad drivers.

I grew up in this neighborhood, remember when no stop signs and 35 MPH. I support the stop signs and the slowing down of traffic in this neighborhood and the others. Keep up the good work residents.

Although I appreciate staying on topic (Yeah! New stop signs on Phyllis!!), can I jump on the bandwagon about OBEYING these signs for a second?

To all you drivers out there that don't have time to wait for the person in front of you that IS obeying the law.......stop honking at me when I am waiting for a pedestrian to completely cross the street before I make my turn! Although there is nothing in the California vehicle code about waiting until the pedestrian has reached the sidewalk, you do have to yield to them until it’s safe to proceed, and that judgement is up to the individual driver waiting for the pedestrian to cross.

I would like to also point out, that California Vehicle Code #21959 states "It is unlawful for any person to ski or toboggan on or
across any roadway in such a manner as to interfere with the movement
of vehicles thereon"..........bah-ha!!!!

It seems the more aggressive types are having growing pains realizing their little zip through is now closed, honking and such. I'll be coming to a full and complete stop, checking both directions carefully before proceeding through the intersection. After that I will keep it just a tad below the speed limit. This short cut is not a time saver anymore, but you can use the relaxed pace to calm down a bit, deep breathe and generally relax and enjoy our wonderful area :)

I have noticed that the intersection feels much safer now and it does not seem to disrupt the flow of traffic either. It was very badly needed, it is just too bad we had to lose a neighbor over this. Thanks to everybody in this neighborhood who helped make our community safer.

Unless they close off the whole street, it still is a great shortcut.

A) Still no further reporting of the details of that accident. Was the motorist actually found to be at fault?
B) The increase in traffic through Mtn View neighborhoods is a direct result of both higher density and so-called 'traffic calming' measures implemented on other streets.
Let's further increase the density and also take away one lane each direction from El Camino. And whenever a pedestrian is hit, for any reason, we'll just put up another set of 4 way stops.

Yes, without a doubt its still better to use Phyllis than turning right on Grant from ECR. It certainly is a much more enjoyable intersection now though. I haven't noticed a slow down at all since there's really not that many cars to begin with.

I've also noticed a huge (and welcomed) calming effect on traffic that this once placement has resulted in.
It seems the entire street now is more settled into an average speed which is at the speed limit, not aggressive speeding and braking. Definitely a win win for all. Two thumbs way up. Life in town is just a sliver of a bit better :)

I feel bad for the lady that died and my condolences to her family. I'm glad there are stop signs now, great job! But can we get people to remember what we were taught as youngsters, LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS!! Too many times people just walk right out in front of moving cars. I notice that a lot at blossom valley shopping center people and cars just don't stop and look around there's going to be accidents and God forbid another death.
