The June 7, 2013 (Vol. 21, No. 19) Voice article entitled, "Roundtable group takes on school shooting fears", was the only evidence to be found in the aftermath of this colossal failure of an event by Mountain View's Human Relations Commission. I was quite curious about this event being a good place to guage the current perspectives and climate in my home town. Being born and raised here, I've seen a lot of changes and not all of them can be considered part of an "evolution" of this city. I walked-in to find the same old group of old white guys presented as "leaders" of our community. Chris Block's quote of "Different people, conversation and happenings" is stillborn in light of how the evening proceeded. The same old pro-gun right-wing talking points and lies everyone in the room had suffered through in the wake of Sandy Hook and other such horrific mass murders; and now Santa Monica College. There was a good amount of discuss as to mental health issues, but few solid recommendations. The same old recommendations of fencing-off school campuses and arming faculty and staff. AND, the usual culprits; GANGS, VIDEO GAMES and VIOLENT MOVIES/SHOWS. Plenty of discussion and accusation as to GANGS. I assumed these were the well-known white-people gangs that threaten Mountain View. Since there were no Asian, African-American or Latino community leaders at the Roundtable, I figured such gangs were not part of this topic. The Roundtable and attendees reflected a very homogenous Mountain View. I was also surprised to find so much contradiction on the topic. Being a Mountain View Native, I've always known that THERE ARE NO GANGS IN MOUNTAIN VIEW, ONLY WANNABEES. I was also surprised that there was no discussion as to the adverse affects of the Russian Mob on the Mountain View Business Community, but this is just something the MVPD and MV Press keep on the downlow thinking we are all stupid. The video games and movies/shows discussions brought back memories of futures past in which incredible numbers of people were killed by falling anvils and bundles of dynamite while other people walked the city with their eyes poked-out and holes in their foreheads made by hammer strikes. Yup, all the results of watching too many episodes of the Roadrunner and Wyle E. Coyote, as well as the Three Stooges. The most antiquated part of this event was how out-of-date the perspectives and awareness were. Cellphones, tablets and Laptops are ubiqutous. Communications applications the number one use of these devices. People are communicating more than ever. A normal conversation can now have people miles away participating without giving a second thought. So, how can anyone in this forum see this as a problem? Anyone with Internet access on any of their personal computing devices has the ability to make their thoughts and ideas real with the vast resources and link-minded audiences to be found in cyberspace; for good or bad. So, can a same-day solution or long-term plan of limited resources possibly keep our community leaders and law enforcement ahead of pending dangers in a nanosecond world? Sandy Hook is a reminder of the cultural problems continuing in our society that demand a greater holistic approach to resolve. May be we can start with endeavors that would raise not only the quality, but the value of life for all peoples residing in Mountain View. But, I would be happy just seeing the Human Relations Commission refund the money wasted on this event to the city coffers. Their resignations would be nice, too.
