Special guest Latin jazz trumpeter Ray Vega joins the Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, directed by Murray Low, on Saturday, May 25, at 8 p.m. Vega was the lead trumpet player for Latin giants Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Mario Bauza, and a jazz trumpeter with the Duke Ellington and Vanguard Jazz orchestras, as well as classical composer Osvaldo Golijov. He has arranged several pieces specifically for this performance. Dinkelspiel Auditorium, 471 Lagunita Drive, Stanford.

Kenny Schick, musician/songwriter, returns to Red Rock Coffee on Saturday, May 25, for a free show to introduce his new album, "Shuffle." 201 Castro St., Mountain View.

Shoreline Lake Aquatic Center is offering 50 percent discounts to active military and their families in honor of Memorial Day, for lessons and watersports rentals. Weekend brunch and prepared picnic baskets will be offered on Monday, May 27, as well. Shoreline Lake Aquatic Center and Lakeside Cafe, 3160 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.

what a combination: music and the hiking trails. this must kick-off the summer season. there are many events around the bay area. find what it is that you like and then go for it
