I don't understand why it would cost over $30 million to re-skin the hangar. The structure is already there. Presumably some infrastructure (water, electricity) is already there. All you need is insulation, wiring, and sheet metal, and a crew to install it. For $30 million??

I can see if you wanted to add multi-story internal floors and offices it may cost more, but still, $30 million? That number sounds more like a bid for a government contract than an actual commercial cost.

Yes! An air and space museum would be such a gift to this area! I think back to the day the retired shuttle flew by - tons of people turned out just to glimpse a piece of history fly by.

I think the structure would look great with some sort of glass/transparent siding to add interior light. It looks interesting right now with its metal skeletal structure.

80 million flights per year would be almost 3 flights per second. Nobody has ever proposed numbers even remotely close to that even if they were very pro-aviation. San Jose has about 134,000 flights per year.

Hangar One is gone. A skeleton remains in its place. Eventually that will be gone too. Either by demolition or gravity.

No one is going to build office space INSIDE a hangar. We want to work in areas with WINDOWS to the outside.

And no one is going to install glass over the skeleton. Besides being a waste of money it really wouldn't be Hangar One anymore, which is the whole point right?

On top of all that the Hangar is in a terrible place for business. An abandonded airfield is far from desirable.

1. Reskin it.
2. Build a flying full size replica of the Macon or Akron inside, with passenger provisions a la the Hindenburg, using Zeppelin NT technology.
3. Bring Airship Ventures back to run and fly it.
4. Offer sightseeing tours around California, possibly cruises to Hawaii or Nova Scotia or Baja California.
5. Make bajillions.

I want the number of flights a year to be limited to about 3 to 3 thousand, 24 thousands will not be acceptable to those of us living near the airport. A good use would be for Google to restore the massive hanger for a place to park their airplanes and to reserve some of the space for a Moffett Field history museum and perhaps related activities.
