Obviously this was a brazen crime, but not unheard of. If you cannot lock you bike, a quick tip is to "drop" the chain off the chain ring when you leave it.
If someone jumps on and tries to ride away, you now have time to catch up to them since they won't be able to pedal away quickly. I've used this when I had to leave my bike unlocked(but never ever unlocked and out of sight) Not something to depend on, but a little extra time to stop the thief from riding away.

McGruff, that's a good tip; I never thought of that way of making a bike hard to steal. Thanks!

My bike came with that feature; the chain somehow knows to fall off of the sprocket right when I need it most.
