This is an idea whose time has come, and I hope it will set a new trend for living in later years. The combination of privacy with community, shared responsibility as well as help available when needed, is a model that many people might prefer to living alone or in a residential community for retirees.
I wish the MV co-housing community great success!

Thanks for quoting me in the article, Daniel. I'm one of the members of the MV Cohousing Community. In response to MadamPresident's comment, I can assure you that high prices were sure not what we wanted. However, between the cost of the land, the even more expensive undergrounding of all the parking, the limited number of condo homes we are allowed to build on this lot, and the design features built in to make the development "green", this is where we ended up. To our surprise, the prices of our homes will be equal to or less than other recent high-quality condo construction in the area (MV, Palo Alto, Los Altos). So it's actually turning out to be a bargain!

Looks great. Looking at the possibility of buying in.

I live in a co-housing development of 28 homes near Steven's Creek trail and it's wonderful! Neighbors are so nice; great company when wanted, but privacy too. The article states: Mountain View's first co-housing project will soon provide a different sort of lifestyle. - But it doesn't sound any different than a regular Homeowners Association.
I wish you as much happiness as I have found here!

You lost me at "homeowners association" - those things are toxic.
