I think communities should be allowed to deputize community members as traffic officers. Deputies could stand like this officer with a video camera and radar (or just use motion detection software to estimate the speed from the video). Deputies would record speeders, zoom in on the license plate, and then have weekly meetings with the police to review the recordings and issue citations by mail. I'd volunteer for a weekly shift!

Thank you! I am all about giving bikes the share of the road but I see way too many run lights and swerve around obstacles just to gain ground. It has to be a 2 way street bikers cannot have it both ways!!!!!!!!!

Used to be if you were 5mph over the limit on California, you got a ticket, period. Now if you don't drive fast, you are tailgated and passed by the majority of drivers. Every where you go in MV, you see drivers speeding, running stop signs and generally ignoring the safety of other motorists.
Why does it take people getting killed for the do-nothing police department to finally take action? What's wrong with this picture?

Glad to see it! Bust those speeders until their wallets bleed. Hit them with fines, then additional fees, then insurance hikes. Repeat as needed until they get the point or lose their license. LOVE IT!

With enough public outcry, we can actually get some protection from the MVPD. Hope the death rate doesn't spiral from all those California stops that will now go unpunished.

Just today at this very intersection a car was speeding. At 3:OO when kids are getting of school. I remember when a man was killed right at this intersection over 15 years ago. He was a neighbor of mine.

I like how cops never follow the same rules they ticket citizens for. Pathetic.

Every time I see a driver pulled over by a cop, I LAAAAUGH and laugh.
Silly entitled drivers. Don't you know that just because you complain about everyone else on the road, it doesn't mean you are still not the most dangerous thing on the road.

I've NEVER seen a bike rider following the rules of the road.

Rolling through stop signs is probably the biggest offense a bike rider commits. I've never seen a bike rider actually stop at a stop sign.

The last thing any of us want is traffic cameras. No matter how great a driver you think you are you break traffic laws every time you get behind the wheel. Even look at the CVC? It's as big a phone book. No way you're not breaking at least a few of those laws.

I'm fine with giving an intersection special attention from the police. Let's keep it reasonable. No need to slaughter the whole herd just because a few sheep get out of line.

So lets see, because people see cyclists run stop signs, efforts to catch speeders who have been regularly slaughtering people on the roads are not needed? Yep, I've never seen a cyclist stop either. I've also never read where this action has taken a life in MV.
When red light running cyclists start regularly taking lives on MV roads, we can discuss the importance of stopping that compared to stopping the drivers who have already begun the life taking tally.
The simple fact of the matter is that the laws of physics make cars inherently much more dangerous than a bike and therefore, we must look hardest at the vehicles causing the most damage.
Speed cameras. That's what we need. Speed is something every driver can control. They won't enforce all violations, only speeding. If you don't speed, they won't catch you. I LOVE this idea.
Lets rev up those radar guns and start teaching scofflaw drivers how to behave in public and _NOT_ kill people.
Nail each and every cyclist who runs a stop too. Time for laws to come back in fashion. Sorry impatient chronic speeders and stop sign running cyclists. its now time for YOU to change YOUR behaviors.

Otto complains that bike riders never obey the law, then objects to the use of cameras because...... car drivers are always breaking the law.

No need to point finger to any of the three groups, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Each group has people obeying laws and each group has people violating laws.

Just catch the speedy drivers, red light and stop sign running cyclists, and jaywalking pedestrians. Or at least find ways to limit them doing so.

When these people are caught and learned to follow laws, it will make other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safer.

There are very few police to go around, and they can't write a ticket for every single violation. They should concentrate on behavior that i dangerous and not on minor technical violations, which is what they generally do. That won't satisfy the bike haters who want to see a citation for every bike who rolls through a stop sign, and it won't satisfy the car haters who want to see a citation for every driver who fails to signal for a turn, but it is the best use of a limited resource.

Thank you, Arnold. Exactly the point I've been trying to make. MVPD seems to concentrate on the petty, easily enfoced infractions, while ignoring real safety issues. Want some evidence? Watch people running red lights at a busy intersection. Eventually you will see it happen directly in front of the PD, generating absolutely no reaction. Seen it enough that it no longer shocks me.
