Original post made on Sep 29, 2012

Khan Academy, the internet teaching sensation, will have a bigger presence in the classroom. Mountain View's elementary and middle school district is expanding its use of the web-based teaching program, with more than 30 teachers set to bring the technology into their classrooms this year.

This is great, but for several years, several Huff Students (and ex-students as us) have been utilizing a more comprehensive program from Stanford named EPGY. It is for math and language arts and covers K-12. several years back, a group of parents really pushed to get Huff and MVSD on board, because it is a great program for ANY level of student, but as usual, it fell on deaf ears, and got little support. EPGY now has independent enrollment, and my kids are still doing it, (5 years now) and are working well above their grade level.

It helped a lot when we moved to Ohio, where the standard elementary school curriculum is well above MVSD.

"it fell on deaf ears"? Humm, you can't possibly be talking about the MVWSD? And I thought Waverly Park had its own Superintendent and Trustee. (clear throat ... )

Seriously now - it's hard to improve "Strategic Goal 5: Engage students, parents and the community ..." when there are no particular metrics on how well you do this. The League of California Cities has such metrics, and workbooks and research in how to do this better. I'm much more of a fan of the LCC than of the CSBA (California School Boards Association) for examples of GREAT government.

"Good Communication" is two way. (that's also how you stay married)

BTW - Salman Kahn's material is $ 0 and Sal is a Cuesta Park neighborhood resident.

SN is a candidate for MVWSD Board (and I have so much free time because I'm mostly retired!)
