Damn! OK, I have to admit, I loved knowing where these were and showing them to my friends who had no clue these were in MV. It was always a great mini discovery moment when I would show them. I'll miss that, but I'm glad the 2 sections will be more readily seen by all. Pretty cool but sad my secret is out.

Put each one in the road barriers along Castro Street. They could stand as a reminder of who really owns the city....and of the fact that chairwarmers at City Hall can be replaced..

That's great news. All the US haters in the Bay Area should see the wall and read the plaque.

Hopefully they will protect the wall from local graffiti.

I missed the meeting on Tuesday because I am taking night classes, but I am glad the Council sees the value of such incredible pieces of history. Had I been there, I would have suggested that they place it on City Hall plaza, for the same reasons the_punnisher mentioned. It would serve as a great reminder of what happens when the government has too much control over the people and takes away their freedoms. The wall that is being built today cannot be seen, but I am sure we can all feel its effects!

Downtown for sure. My vote - City Hall Plaza, Pioneer Park or Castro Street itself! What a display item this would be. Mountain View rocks!

This is incredible! We are so fortunate!!
We saw sections of the Wall like these in the Newseum in Washington DC and it was SO moving. My kids really knew nothing about this history and it made an indelible impression when they learned about it. It is one of their most vivid memories of their trip to DC. It is eery to see the art and messaging all over West Germany's side, and the stark white on the East German side (machine gun patrols on one side, freedom on the other).
My only worry is that being outside, such priceless and irreplaceable historic pieces will be damaged or destroyed by the elements and/or vandals. They are museum worthy...how can we ensure they are well preserved??

These sections of the wall have an even greater personal meaning for me and I hope they are displayed in a prominent place in Mountain View. Most of my family is from East Germany, my mother the only one to escape. I was fortunate to have lived there with my grandparents for a short time in the 70's. I know first hand what it was like to live under a communist state. The history is very important and is not that far back in the past. If you care to know what it was like please see the movie "THE LIVES OF OTHERS" Its the closest you'll get to the reality of what life was like.
