Why is it that violent drunks from EPA, the East Bay, and the far South Bay come to downtown Mountain View? Is it just the Monte Carlo or is there something else that attracts them?

It's 'cause MV Downtown is THE place to fight! Friday Fight Nights is what my friends call it. The best venues are at places like Cafe Gellato. Or Book Buyers. Or Global Beads. The most hardcore of hardcore shops, man.

I gotta laugh at all the imagined problems a cannabis dispensary was supposed to cause (except where they've been established, those scenarios have not played out at all...proven wrong), then look at how many problems are linked to alcohol, and everyone seems fine with it.
So lets recap:
Cannabis dispensary: Huge magnet for problems that will never happen.
Alcohol dispensary: Huge magnet for horrible violent crimess occurring almost weekly...people seem OK w/ it.
LOL!

The reason drunks and barflies come to Mountain View is because our fair city offers so many options for them to get loaded, roam the streets and make mayhem (at taxpayers expense of course)...

MOLLY'S- open until 2AM - 7 DAYS PER WEEK

ZEN LOUNGE: open until 2AM, Thurday, Friday, Saturday.
And of course...the infamous Monte Carlo

The City of MV had better wake up and start putting restrictions on these places, otherwise Castro Street is going to end up like downtown San Jose after dark.

Does it say in the article that they were drinking at a downtown establishment? I read that they were drunk, but also that they're teenagers. The downtown bars take underage drinking pretty seriously, so I wouldn't just assume that they were at a bar.

K, what are you really getting at? Should we shut down those 4 businesses because you don't like them? Should we ban alcohol in Mountain View? I'd really like to know if you're suggesting something or just complaining.

I would never suggesting banning alcohol (God forbid), Maybe these 'young ladies' were not in a bar, so I take back that assumption, I am sure there is a reasonable explanation as to why they were drunk, 60 miles from home and beating the daylights out of each other...anyway..

I was complaining AND making a suggestion:

MY COMPLAINT There there have been numerous instances when patrons from these late night establishments require police intervention at taxpayer expense and the City seems to do nothing about it. Your OMV neighbors have witnessed much of this bad behavior when the bars close (as has been noted on this forum whenever these incidents occur).

MY SUGGESTION The City needs to keep closer tabs on these businesses, 1am closing time, ban late night happy hours, fine them for any police calls caused by their patrons (maybe that already happens have no idea).

Would love to see a jazz club or piano bar downtown (grown up alernatives to hip hop DJ's)

Apologize for going totally off topic, still curious as to why the 'teens' ended up in MV from Hollister, let's hope they did not drive here.

I would second a jazz or piano bar downtown, and I say that as a huge fan of hip-hop. I know that the bars have taken steps to try and prevent some of the trouble seen late night downtown. Just the other night I wasn't allowed to come into the Zen Lounge because I was wearing a Giants jacket. They said it had to do with gangs. I'm a mid-30's professional so it's a bit of a slight, but overall it's their call.

I think it has a lot more to do with patrons attitudes than it does the bars themselves. Everyone wants to be a tough-guy, even the young ladies apparently. The problem is bigger than our downtown unfortunately.

Mountain View has a gang problem. I am not understanding why some have blamed this on east bay or other communities. Yes, one of the women is from Hollister. I put money that the other is from Mountain View. Putting a cap on the bar won't help Mountain View's gang problem. Most people who live here are completely ignorant to the violence and shootings that take place in this city. Gangs on the other side of central, and gangs in the area by California and Lathom, all of those apartments where crime is rampant, but nobody wants to address it. Mountain View is a city of rich and very poor. The school scores reflect this fact.

@Sam - Apparently you don't live in Mountain View. Mountain View does NOT have a gang problem at the moment. Yes, I would agree that 10 years ago we did - however that has changed. I have been living on California Street since 1998. California Street consist of mostly Stanford students, Google employees, LinkedIn employees, Facebook employees, Testla etc. - are those the people that you're calling ignorant? If not them, who are you calling ignorant? Latinos? Oh, and please tell me the last time there was a shooting in Mountain View, I would like to know.

Need to close Monte Carlo and Zen. It's getting too dangerous walking around downtown after 9PM. It is attracting the type of people who are causing problems and will eventually drive out people who want to go to restaurants. I did not want to linger at dinner past 10PM at Scratch because of people who will start showing up to Mountain View in the evening hours. I am also afraid to park the car in downtown anymore. I've lived in Mountain View for 35 years and I never felt this way until recently. Too many fights, groping, drunks walking around town.

@K and @Bruno It would be very nice to have a jazz club or a piano bar in downtown Mountain View, except that no savvy businessperson would touch either of those ideas with a ten foot pole. Even Yoshi's had to resort to hiring non-jazz artists to keep the lights on.

Want to make a million dollars from a jazz club? Easy. Start with two million.

I would like to see the Monte Carlo shut down and in it's place have a jazz/blues venue. I think Silicon Valley Yuppies would gladly pay for a good dinner, music time. Also they could sell 420 and everyone has a good time, no fights, no problem.

Here we go again with the old money MV trying to turn downtown MV into University Ave. As a homeowner in Old Mountain View, I actually enjoy Zen Lounge. Even though I've never been to the Monte Carlo; however, I support their right to operate. It's simple supply and demand, the people (not just the old money) of Mountain View want the club to survive and so they give it repeat business.

There used to be Bouncers who pretty much managed the patron's behavior. The police can only respond AFTER there is a problem...the bars are responsible for checking ID's, not overserving and maintaining a safe, albeit fun, environment. Kids will get drunk anywhere they can. Did they take the trian or drive?
Bars cannot afford to lose their license because of minors so my bet is that they got plastered elsewhere.

Well Cali, I am from here, and currently live in Mountain View, my children were born at El Camino Hospital. I can tell you there are shootings at Mariposa and Villa, Escuela, California, Eldora and El Camino within the last few years, rengstorf park at a family picnic. Yes, if those precious employees at those companies don't know about the crime that happens in Mountain View then they are ignorant. I think lumping people who work at those employees is a little silly as I talk to people daily in Mountain View and am employed at one of those companies you listed. I also talk to people who are in gangs in Mountain View. They are multi-generational gangs. I don't just speak to white/Asian affluent people. I suggest you do the same and broaden your horizons, that and read the police blotter regularly like I do. I am not buying a home in Mountain View because of the crime.

If you want to know what attracts this crime it is Mountain View's more than average low income housing and the several half houses in our neighborhoods.

Mountain View is a city of Wealthy and Poor and not much in the middle.
