Steins beer garden appeal goes to council Tuesday

Original post made on Jun 29, 2012

Opponents of a proposed downtown restaurant and beer garden may have plenty of frustration directed at them in Tuesday's City Council meeting, if online comments are any indication.

"They cited existing issues with the Monte Carlo night club, which closes at 2 p.m."

A night club that closes at 2 PM, is that right?

They obviously meant 2AM.

The objections are typical, but nuts. We either have a downtown that people want to visit, spend money, and have a good time, or we have a pathetic "downtown" such as Los Altos, which is useless and dead at night.

If you choose to live near downtown, whether it's San Francisco, Mountain View or wherever, you are buying into the idea that there are people, energy, fun and things to do in the evening. If you don't want that, move elsewhere.

When I hire employees to come work at my Mountain View business, they complain that nothing is going on down here. Let's change that by getting more interesting and entertaining businesses downtown so we have a vibrant community.

This is a typical I want to live downtown where I do not have to drive to carry out my daily stuff but do not let the businesses that are necessary to a viable and active down town. I want to live there but wants noise levels at a country estate level. It is all about me which is a typical California liberal way of thinking.

If my map's correct, isn't the Tied House just a couple doors down? With a restaurant in between? And isn't there a restaurant across Bryant with a large outdoor seating area? I don't get where there's grounds for complaining when you've already got this kind of atmosphere surrounding you. Beer gardens are not nightclubs.

I am born and raised in Mountain View and this resturant fits the mosaic of downtown and its ongoing growth into a first rate destination. This resturant provides a new and exciting venue to compliment the existing food and beverage selection. My office is downtwon and now we have another choice for lunch and dinner. Good Job Steins for providing such a wonderful new location for downtown residents and visitors to enjoy.

Steins should be allowed to stay open at night as all of the other resturants with outdoor seating are, and not be restricted by one or two residents that do not speak for the community or the majority.

It is even sillier when you consider the site already has been a restaurant for a long time - it is the address of the long-standing but now defunct Golden Wok. The city planners have no problem with massive new projects that cause significant disruption to noise and traffic but someone tries to reopen a restaurant and a couple of complaining outliers shut it down.

Alcohol is the Devils Tool, a Pot Club would be more moral.

I live very close to this project and fully support it, I think a German-inspired beer garden would improve downtown and that site in particular. The Tied House doesn't make much noise unless there's a very exciting sports game going on, and that doens't bother me or my two kids. I think there's a lot of mis-directed anger at the Monte Carlo. The owners of the Monte Carlo are making money hand over fist and don't give a rat's house how they are affecting downtown.

Let's not let other businesses suffer because of Monte Carlo. That place should have been shut down years ago. I don't even walk NEAR the MC on Fri/Sat night.

Agreed. As another downtown resident w/in two blocks of this place, I'm in favor of Steins, but much more in favor of figuring out a way to oust the Monte Carlo.
