Review: Steinbeck shines on stage

No one familiar with Robert Kelley's vast and impressive body of work as TheatreWorks' founder and artistic director should be surprised to learn that his current production of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" is a gorgeous and affecting piece. Kelley has created a staging of Steinbeck's melodrama that is nearly flawless in its simplicity.

I have a question:

Has there ever been a reviewer who just flat out said, 'This show was horrible'?

That's what I thought. That's why any review like this is worthless.

Last week I saw "Of Mice and Men" and thought it was the best play that I've seen in years! There was an instant standing ovation at the end, so I was not the only one that felt that way. It's intense (and at times disturbing) with incredible acting and a beautiful set.

This review was fair, describing both the good and bad aspects.
