The HSR authority heard, at the hearing in Mountain View earlier this month that the legislature, the legislative analyst, the peer review board, and local residents wanted construction to begin at the bookends (Peninsula and L.A.) As a result of the hearing, the HSR authority knew that there was significant risk that the legislature would not approve funds for the 300 mile Obama Railroad in central CA. As I see it, this is a quid pro quo arrangement - vote to release the funds for the 300 mile Obama Railroad and we will electrify Caltrain.

I'm not sure how to interpret this news in light of high-speed rail's being a boondoggle with insufficient funding that is never going to actually be built. If Caltrain hitches its wagon to the High-Speed Rail Authority, how is it not going to end up losing?

Caltrain's wagon was headed towards the cliff as it was, barely scraping enough money to continue operating, never mind $1.5 billion for electrification. To me hitching it to HSR seems like a risk worth taking.

Regardless, this doesn't make the HSR any better deal, than it was before. Its still a bad idea considering the total project cost vs. benefit ratio.
Caltrain just prostituted itself to get cash for its project, and HSR obliged since it needs supporters.

As long as they are doing it, how about underpasses at every crossing eliminating all traffic crossings.

Yes UNDERPASSES; we need them. Especially at Rengstorff at Central Expressway. To me this is the worst intersection in Mountain View. I hope that we do not have to wait a long time for an underpass/bridge situation. I bypass this intersection at all costs.
