Social Indictment
"...traffic investigators believe a number of people may have witnessed the accident..." Come on now, almost no witnesses were at the scene or tried to help; at 5:40 pm on a Sunday? What has happened to this society? It reminds of the toddler girl that was run over twice on October 18th in China (video is available online). Have we become a society of insects unmoved by the suffering, injury, and death of people near to us? Do we as a society see everyday life as an on-going movie, dissociating us from our humanity and our ability to act?
Possibly Charlie Chaplin can add some consolation when he said "Nothing is permanent in this wicked world - not even our troubles."

Did the driver have a license? Insurance? Was the car properly registered?

The police were out there today taking measurements and asking for witnesses. Sometimes at a busy intersection things happen so fast and accident happen when you blink, in fact I think that is often how accidents happen.
That intersection is particularly dangerous with a lot of fast moving cars merging off the freeway and a lot of pedestrians, many of them seniors traveling to the store or medical center from several senior mobile home parks. This is not the first senior fatality near that intersection.
These sad and tragic accidents remind us to slow down, pay attention, and to be on the lookout for cars, pedestrians and bicyclists that share the road with us.

REREAD IT. The article says ". . . Monday, Nov. 7.", not Sunday.

Nikki, thank you for your calm and reasoned commentary about how bad this intersection often is.
