Small number of students skip vaccine

A small percentage of local students opted out of an all-but-mandatory whooping cough vaccination this year, school officials from both Mountain View districts said. According to a county health officer, the number of students skipping the shot is not enough to jeopardize the larger student population.

Good to hear the vast majority of parents are letting their kids get vaccinations! Remember how "herd immunity" works: even if you personally aren't that concerned about whooping cough, by allowing your child to be vaccinated you are reducing the number of viruses in circulation. This protects the newborn, the severely ill, the allergic, an others who can't get the vaccination for medical reasons.
