Local swimmers abandon ship in Hawaii

A boat carrying six swimmers from a Mountain View open-ocean, competitive swimming team sank suddenly in choppy conditions between the Hawaiian islands of Lanai and Maui on Sept. 3.

Disrespectful comment? A boat sinks, and another swimmer gets run over by another boat. [Portion removed due to disrespectful comment or offensive language] Believe it or not, 99% of accidents are avoidable. The lesson here is that the boat that sunk, was not seaworthy or appropriate for the type of seas it encountered. Running over a swimmer could have been avoided by having proper command and control and accountability over the event to include a sufficient number of spotters. Yes, sometimes the truth might seem disrespectful. Kind of like telling people they are idiots if they don't wear seat belts, check the condition of their car tires, and obey speed laws. When they don't, people get killed.
