Thank you, MV Resident, for your dose of reality check. It looks like it's time to bear arms, whether concealed, legal or not. These ceratures are not playing by the rules that hamstring the police and the citizenry, so why should we? My wife and I are going to be "fully dressed" from now on, and take care of ourselves.

Funny how the Voice loves to report on these crime stories, which are at their base, narratives of purported and as-of-yet unproven illegal activity, although the public will never know unless the perpetrators are caught. It could be that the necklace belonged to the people who 'stole' it. How can we know for sure unless the alleged criminals are caught and their account is made known under due process of law? The Voice's account, however, in this story and others on crime is definitive and conclusive. "A man stole a necklace from a 25-year-old woman." Really? According to who? Has it been proven?

On the other hand, the Voice also loves to cover the Day Worker Center, which openly sanctions illegal activity even though local, state, and federal laws are broken there every day. The subject of illegal activity is never addressed, open-ended and inconclusive suggesting a staggering naivety on the part of the authors as well as a general assumption that a large portion of the readership must be plain stupid. In fact the editors are loathe to allow the term 'illegal immigrant' to ever appear. Compared to articles spun off the police logs, Day Worker Center articles are always in support of what is roundly recognized on all sides as activity that violates the law, no different in a court of law, than when some one has been found or alleged, let us say, to have stolen someone's necklace, hurled a bottle at some one, stolen a laptop or jewelry, or burglarized private or public property.

To cover their hypocrisy, editors at the Voice attempt to control their message by violating the spirit of free speech on message boards. I've been watching poor Jesse's simple question "Is this near the Day Worker Center?" appear and disappear day in and day out on the boards for the last several days. As another poster previously commented, it's truly funny how seven simple words can be read into and rankle The comment might be interpreted as insignificant, cynical, mocking, harmless or whatever, but the Voice would like to label it as somehow racist and agitating. If anything it exposes the blatant hypocrisy that the Voice engages in under the banner of so-called professional journalism and in the end plays to the same tune to which the editors at the Voice dance.

Ned, free speech cannot be abused where it does not exist. Going on 20 years of popular internet usage and people STILL make the mistake of thinking the msg boards on the internet are public places, and not private.
This is in essence, a private board that is open for public use. Because its private, the owners dictate its content.

Besides, Jesse was simply being childish a provocateur with his comments, throwing them out to get people riled up, then running away, never addressing their questions. I say this is excellent msg board management to delete his posts, what with all the trolls out there.

Ok, Adult, so now address the rest of my points. And if you can read, I said "the spirit of free speech". And the media does play a major role in free speech, and always has throughout history, so I think you are being a bit disingenuous in your argument.

Only those without a clear understanding of the medium even presume there is a "spirit of free speech" on internet msg boards.
Now on your other points: Yes, I think the Voice glamorizes the DWC and goes out of its way not to touch on the aspect of illegal workers.
Yes, saying someone stole something without a conviction can be untrue, but when the victim reports it to the police and since its become a common crime lately I'm gonna not get too too upset over this, but perhaps they could say "Woman claims man snatches necklace" instead. Problem solved and everyone still knows what happened.
And yes, I think Jesse was being a complete child, trying to irritate for the sake of irritating, so yes I fully support the removal of those posts. Its simply noise, as is this thread now, so go ahead and finish it up, you get the last word.

I think everyone understands there is no lawful right to post anything you want on an internet forum or blog... but Ned has a point with respect to the role of the media. It is called the MOUNTAIN VIEW voice... even the name pretends to be a community advocate. So, when we see story after story about the positives of the DWC and even a story about a documentary film about "the other side of the story" about illegal immigrants, yes... it wears on people. Jesse is just venting his frustration (in what many probably think is an annoying fashion) at the real "other side of the story" not being told by the voice, or any other local publication for that matter. And when the voice removes Jesse's posts, but leaves personal attacks (e.g. accusing others of racism) for anyone that dares to point out the negatives of the DWC and illegal immigration in general, people get fed up. Having said that, I read the MV Voice for the same reasons I listen to both NPR and conservative talk radio... it is difficult to form an educated opinion without considering many viewpoints by gathering your information from a multitude of sources. The Voice does not even pretend to provide a 'fair and balanced' coverage of local events... it has an agenda and I'm OK with that. Does not mean I won't point it out to others on these boards though :)
