Why spend money to remove the coating, then say We have no money to repair or want anyone else to take over the project. Better call in the Autobots, maybe some alien UFO crashed landed there years ago.

The Skin was a ticking time bomb... lots of nasty stuff in the paint and it was starting to flake off and go airborne. The navy was responsible for cleanup and wanted to demolish, but advocates and NASA convinced them just to remove the toxics at roughly the same cost as demolition. Now, with no money in hand, and all the Navy's money committed to cleanup, it will likely have to be demolished at additional cost anyway.

NASA and the House Republicans are not going to remove Hangar one... The EPA and Lenny are.

I still think saving the hanger is a good idea with lots of possible uses. The skeletal structure is really something to see now that the siding is being removed. Stepping up by private entities would be a really great thing as the government just keeps wasting time and money delaying a real plan.

Hope the structure can be kept in someway, and for some use.
It has been a known building for lots of years! And a rather unusual building to see!
