Unlike Dergun, we can't go to another city and put my child into another school. So I think it's unfair how my son can't get into his neighborhood school but instead go to another school which is way out of way for our busy schedule. Effort or not, the district needs to make more room for children living in the neighborhood instead of first come, first serve. It's completely unfair! I have to take my son to a school so far away when I could just walk to the school where we actually live. Why can't the district prioritize neighborhood kids to the neighborhood school and THEN go on with the first come, first serve?! It's so unfair!

You do get priority for your neighborhood school, as long as you register during the priority period (the entire month of February). When did you register your son?

Yesterday there were a dozen comments from community members and parents supporting our schools and specifically Theuerkauf, with it's multi-media enhanced GATE program and completely iMac equipped computer lab. Now the comments have been removed, but "enrollment" is still misspelled in the article!!

@Emily: They have always given priority to neighborhood kids, for a specified amount of time. Priority enrollment does end in early spring for the coming school year, though, because they have to let people who are applying to tranfer know, and the schools need to know who they are getting. If they wait until just before school opens to see how many people moved into the neighborhood that summer, it would be total chaos trying to figure out enrollment, and notify people on transfer lists, who might then decide not to change, notify the next one on the list, etc. Simply unworkable. But next year, if you live in the neighborhood, you should get priority enrollment for your child when enrollment opens up. Sometimes spots open up in the first week of the school year, with kids who move or change their minds about at school, and then those slots go first to neighborhood families who did not get their neighborhood school. Unless the system has changed; but that's how they used to do it.
