My staff sources tell me that some council members want to hire a female and would have preferred that the interim city manager apply. Most of the staff are nervous that an outsider will shake things up too much.

If you go into a hiring process thinking you want to hire a female, I think that's pretty unfair to some applicants. I hope that is not the case and that some council members have no bias for or against an applicant simply based on their gender.

I sincerely hope that hiring an outsider will shake things up, and I can understand why staff would fear that. It's time Mountain View had city government that answers to the citizens, not the other way around.
