How small was this copper that he should fear and overhead "deadly" blow from someone five feet tall? a 250 pound person at that height isn't exactly _light_ on their feet.

I'm perplexed but not really surprised to hear that a full-grown, armed, trained male police officer was basically schooled by a 16-year old female!!! Way to go dude! If the 16-year old had been a male, we might well have an officer beaten by his own baton and then fatally shot with his own service weapon. Sounds like maybe more training and better physical conditioning might be in order for Mountain View's finest. If Mountain View police officers were to relocate to east L.A., they'd last about a week before being killed or running away screaming and pulling out what's left of their hair!

just a guess but I'm thinking the age of some of the commenters so far is about 17, mentally or literally...doesn't really matter, but they sure do stick out, even in a comment room full of many times non-adult acting adults.

Guadalupe, seriously? Kids growing up as runaways have everything they want? These kids only observed blant disregard for life and boundaries while growing up. Plus they are teenagers. They *know* they know everything. They will be lucky if they survive to 23-24 when it starts to dawn that they were wrong.
I am thankful police officer did not use full blown force immediately.

Yes Guacamole... I am very serious. There is A LOT of help out here for runaway youth and of course they have a choice. In this incident she chose an alternative not in her best interest. And considering these kids think they *know* everything its sad. But hey in my country I thought I knew everything until I was shown a little something and I Chose to go a different way. I too was a youth in the system, troubled in every way BUT there was a different way for me to choose from even after I decided I knew everything...I mean its sad the last thing to fully develope in your brain is reasoning etc.. and the description of this girl.. don't under estimate what 250 looks like on a girl with a small height. Placements I've been in I've seen the smallest of small ggirls do the most damage and same with the "bigger" girls....

I personally think that it's both scary and sad that people have so little regard for both authority and other people in general that someone would go grabbing after a police officer's baton and think it's okay, moreover beat them with it.

Our police are public servants, and from the officers I've met; they take that duty seriously.

If you really want your cops to be tough bad-ass types of characters, they'd be exactly the stereotype of "mean cops" who indulge in police brutality. There's no way to win that.

Our public servants are serving their community (read: us). If you fail to show them respect, moreover threaten them with weapons, obtained by violating their person and their uniform in the first place... what do you expect to happen?

Being community begins with understanding that when you treat others with courtesy and respect, you give yourself the right to receive the same. And if you treat others (especially public servants and authority figures) with disrespect and violence, you're pretty much asking to receive the same. Which will lead into why you yourself should be entitled to beating up on someone with as much effectiveness as them beating up on you; and from there to the spiraling escalation of violence.

We can go on and on about who was taller, heavier, tougher, etc etc etc. None of that addresses the root issue: misbehaviour begets misbehaviour, and respect begets respect. The rest is semantics and dramatization of a situation that was all bad to begin with.

One word: Taser

First let's define that the Officer WAS facing deadly force when this teenager (regardless of gender) made the attempt to strike him in the head with his baton!! Being struck with that baton (particularly in the head) would be akin to being struck with a solid wood baseball bat!! In fact in law enforcement there are forbidden places to intentionally strike a suspect due to their lethality or permanently debilitating effect(s), the head is one of those places. Although I am not familiar with the details of this incident other than what was reported on this medium, it is clear that the Officer attempted to peacefully de-escalate the situation (tried to talk the distraught and obviously unstable TEENAGER) into complying. He obviously took the situation very seriously and took ALL of the factors into consideration (he was dealing with an emotionally [possibly mentally] unbalanced TEENAGER who was remanded to a group home for UNSTABLE TEENAGERS) and took the most appropriate action and that was to first attempt to de-escalate the situation WITHOUT using force. Until of course force became NECESSARY and he used the MINIMUM force necessary to control the situation and prevent further/unneccessary harm (possibly lethal, keep in mind the Officer has several other tools on his duty belt) to himself, the teenage girl, and others. The Officer showed GREAT restraint in how he handled the situation. Again he used the MINIMUM force necessary to control the situation; how many people can say that once they got the upperhand they would NOT have thrown a few extra punches, kicks, baton strikes back on the person who attacked them? People who are NOT in law enforcement are the most amusing as they ALWAYS think they are the authority on law enforcement and what actions should have been taken, how the law should be/enforced, always Monday morning quarterbacking without EVER having been in that type of situation!! People NEED to be MUCH more grateful to the men and women of law enforcement who put THEIR lives on the line every day to keep the streets safe for EVERYONE!!!!!
