Council extends free Google WiFi deal

Original post made on Feb 25, 2011

Mountain View's residents may enjoy free Google WiFi for another five years, thanks to an agreement the City Council quietly approved Tuesday. However, Google wants to be able to abandon the system under certain circumstances.

I'm pretty sure it was $12000/year instead of $1200/year.

I'm just waiting for the city for a way to tax the users of this service.

I am wondering how many residents in Mountain View are using Google Wi-Fi "indoors"? (Apartments, etc.) As I hear it is not easy or possible to use the service indoors.

"Google is apparently concerned about taxes or public health issues that could become associated with the network."

What are public health issues exactly? Are they like RADIATION??? I understand such radiation from cell towers could cause cancer and a myriads of other debilitating disorders as discussed previously here on this site.

"... or the system requires some modification due to a determined health or safety risk ..."

Does this mean there is "health or safety risk" in using Google Wi-Fi?

The Google Metro WIFI is now a defacto utility for the residents of Mtn. View, there is no going back.

Thank you Google and Mtn. View for this invaluable service. I will personally start a grass roots gorilla marketing campaign against ANYONE who tries to discontinue the service.

FYI, yes you can get service indoors... You just have to do your home work. I'm sure there are thousands of us getting good connections indoors. The "secret" is not to rely on the built-in WIFI modems on your computers, you have to buy a high power WIFI modem and possibly a booster antenna too.

Works great if you stand directly under the telephone pole where the WAP is located, otherwise not so much. You could sit at the Caltrain station and use it, but then you'd get mugged.
