A huge lift for local schools

Original post made on Feb 19, 2011

In the end, it almost seemed too easy. After a few months of mostly cordial but sometimes heated remarks about why the city should share some of the millions of dollars it receives in property tax revenue from the Shoreline Community, the City Council voted last week to allot nearly $14 million to local school districts over the next three years.

I heard that the Mountain View school district will use this money and turn around and refuse Title 1 Federal funds so that two low performing schools will not go into program improvement under No Child Left Behind. Is that what the groups of parents in support of this were after to begin with?

I certainly can't speak for the ShareShoreline group of 6, but many of us do not think the items linked. The program improvement benchmarks (standardized tests) are really warnings that the District (Goldman and Trustees) need to spend more resources and efforts on these particular schools. I have listened to reports from the District that this effort seems to be underway. I myself - have written and asked the Trustees to keep this money. One school is literally a 2 minute slow walk away from the District Office. I think we expect the old "HP Way" - management by walking around, the Superintendent should be directly involved.
The old District Budget Committee which included parents has apparently NOT MET (or been disbanded) for the last several years. I have, by letter and public comment, urged the Trustees to reconstitute that citizen advisory committee. No luck yet!

The old HP way would also be to replace the failing department heads, in this case the principals, who have been supervising the decline of these same schools for several years. Gee, that took me all of 20 seconds to think of and type out.

Concerned citizens will be on the look-out for the district refusing Title I funds!
