Perfect opportunity for the folks at Google to step up and make a contribution to the local community. A nice way of saying thanks for allowing them access to Moffett air field. If there is a non profit fund for donating to this effort please publish the details. Even if they do not reach their goal with small donations, if it appears that a lot of people are involved it may inspire someone to write a big check. Even in this economy there are plenty of people in Silicon Valley who could write a check for 500K and not feel it.

The facility is toxic to our community, useless, and ugly. Just tear the thing down already!

Tear it down and give the $ to Caltrain instead.

A pristine hangar 1 (and 2 and 3) will not only really help the 2020 world's fair at Moffett, but also is essential to further the renaissance in airships ("green aviation") that being led by NASA Ames at Moffett.

Our community and those who enrich themselves upon it must not let short-term thinking and selfishness cause this opportunity to vanish. We have a unique opportunity to tie the noble heritage of NAS Moffett to the future green aerospace economy.

Or we could let the heritage be destroyed and the burried, and the green future with its high-paying jobs and growing tax base slip away to another state or, more likely, another continent.

Where do I send the $1.2M check?

Wanting to tear down Hangar One is the same type of thinking that causes San Jose to lose its Chinatown while the San Francisco Chinatown is a source of pride and tourism revenue for the city of San Francisco. Now all San Jose has is a rather sad sign in front of the Fairmont Hotel.

How about collecting names of volunteers to help with the process. Many of the tasks sounded like things that many hands would be able to help with. "There are 4,638 window panes that would need to be carefully removed to prevent breakage, scraped of putty, decontaminated, catalogued and archived, and packaged."
Volunteers couldn't help with the removal part, but could scrape putty, decontaminate and catalog them.
Maybe that 1.2MM could be knocked in half that way?

Caltrain...right. How about asking Scanlon to kick down 75% of his FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR ANNUAL salary?

Caltrain's problems are: The Union, corrupt bureaucrats/agency executives, and a sizable percentage of "entitled" Customers that feel the taxpayers (that's "Citizens" and legal aliens) should pay their way up and down the peninsula.

The hangars can actually contribute to the local environment. How can you find those building ugly? by all objective measures, they are magnificent displays of human ingenuity and effort. You should move back to the college campus you came from... NIMBYs are the worst..and sadly, you qualify.

Tearing the hangars down...how much embodied energy exists within those hangars? I am amazed that tree-hugging America haters like you are so ignorant.

The volunteer thing is a great idea. Can we get a HAZMAT de-con certification company to train up a group of volunteers... then it would be a matter of leasing or buying the equipment and obtaining access to the flightline to set up a processing area. anyone have knowledge of this?
