They should be... The rip-off artists at this outfit charge ~$3,000 a day for inpatient patients with "behavioral-issues"!

I thought that they had to lay off a bunch of people recently because they were losing so much money from Obamacare.

No layoffs took place although it sounds like schedules were tweaked when they negociated with the Nurse Union

There WERE layoffs and a lot of people are gone.

There were layoffs and also schedule cuts, so if you didn't get laid off you aren't making nearly as much as before. Very few people were not affected by the cuts and many are looking for ways to get by and trying not to worry about whether they will be the next to go. It is a lousy way to live, wondering if you have a future or should try to find another job. Stress is not good for anyone and I can't believe the hospital couldn't have stretched things out so that the employees wouldn't have to suffer the fate of many others. You can always replace employees when the time comes to hire, but you lose the good faith and experience you had with the people you let go. No one seems to value the long term employee any more and the same seems to be true with management. They come and go, usually well paid, whether they perform well or not and in the end walk away better off even if the business they leave isn't. We need changes that keep employees for many years and management that performs well and sticks around until retirement as well. Good people who stay for their whole working life have a personal investment and pride of service that short term employees don't. In the end it gives the customer better service if the business gets the benefit of employees that are dedicated to the long term and know they will be able to work as long as they want to. Support the hospital and its employees and it will pay off in the long run. In return you will not only get their support when you need it, you will get the great service that El Camino has worked to give you for years.

Well said. We do need stability. I agree that long term employees are valuable and should be treated as such. This is true of management as well. The last thing we need is a management change to set us back another 3 years. I do however think the board needs a complete revamp. Arent there members who filled positions without being elected? Can someone quanify how many people were laid off? I thought the concessions made by the Union eliminated the need for layoffs vs schedule reductions? Unfortuneately the situation is not unquie to El Camino. All you have to do is look around the valley layoffs and cuts are a sign of the times.(500 people laid off last week at Yahoo ect...) It sounds like the changes and the cost cutting while not popular is getting done what they needed so stability can return and the hospital can move forward.

Shocked no one has commented on this(see link). Being a public hospital you have to believe 30K professionals (ACHE) know a tough job when they seen one. Now if we could let Mr Graham do his job without the handcuffs of a clown board we might realize the full potential of this hospital. The financial turnaround he has orchestrated so quickly is impressive. Rumor has it being ahead of budget may allow some of the cuts previously made to be reversed and rasises to be implemented(fingers crossed).... That is unless the board finds a way to shoot us in the foot again!
