Holiday sights in Mountain View, any favorites?

Original post made by Daniel DeBolt, Mountain View Voice Staff Writer, on Dec 9, 2010

I've never seen a full blown, highly-trafficked candy cane lane of sorts in Mountain View but perhaps you know of a street that decorates its homes more than the others. If there are any holiday sights worth seeing in Mountain View, please do post their whereabouts here. Our photographer would appreciate it and your fellow residents might as well. Happy Holidays!

USA is a registered user.

There is a short but well done "candy cane lane" on Estate Dr. off of Grant near Fremont.

If you have the ability to use geo-tagged photos, I could send you some pics.

With all the GPS-enabled smartphones in service and a bunch of Google Map experts in Mountain View, you should be able to put together a good guide to the local attractions.

I could tell you where there are some really nicely decorated Christmas Trees, but I won't since you'll feel compelled to call them "holiday" trees.

There seems to be much less decorating going on this year. Why? Rainy weekends got in the way of hanging lights? Economy toning it down? Sad, I miss seeing lots of lights outside residences and festive "Candy Cane" lanes.

@Daniel: We typically have 4-5 well-done houses on Mountain View Ave., but so far not this year.

@Anon: I agree there are fewer decorated houses this year. We typically have about 1,000 feet of lights on our house, but a new baby and a remodel-in-progress have nipped it in the bud this year. But I imagine that's not the most common reason.

@Grinch: We have a pretty good tree, and still call it a "Christmas tree" even though trees come from the pagan tradition surrounding the Winter Solstice (the true "reason for the season"), which was later appropriated by Christianity (ya don't watch your flocks by night in December). Just sayin'. ;-)

I bet all the people who live on a well decorated street are falling silent right now.
Once its in the paper crowds will come. Who wants caravans of cars up and down the street like that Christmas Tree Lane fiasco in Palo Alto.
The best bet is to go out and take a slow leisurely drive through some of the more establish single family home neighborhoods and discover the good spots yourself. Its always a nice discovery when you stumble onto a really cool house or street and that makes it much more fun anyway.
Discover people! We don't need to be spoon fed everything.

The best way to celebrate is in your heart, not by wasting Earth's precious energy on superfluous lights. How high do you want your gas prices to go?

My favorite holiday display is IdeaFarm. He is what Christmas is all about.

You've got to check out Ernie's electric train on the front lawn, with music and friendly visitors and owners who obviously enjoy the folks dropping by. It's going every night from 6-9 p.m. on Adele in the Monta Loma neighborhood (parallel and very close to Central). Meet Ernie. He doesn't know me, but I know him, and you will, too. Fun for kids and adults alike. Thank you to Ernie's nice neighbors for the intrusion.

There are some nice lights/decorations on several houses on Sladky Ave between Springer and Fordham.
