This process was designed to be more like a jury pool, where ordinary citizens would have a decent chance of being selected. I wish Ms. Kuo the best in her work. It's a very daunting task, and I hope the Commission comes up with a plan that ends gerrymandering in California.

I agree, Bruce, and would go farther: Winnowing the applicants down to the candidate pools was more exacting than defining jury pools. Given the small size of the pools compared to those selected, I would say the lottery Jes' Sayin' objects to is the best approach. Having the legislative team (How was that team determined, again?) actually choose the final commission members would undoubtedly lead to cries of favoritism.

It would be best not to have such a commission at all. It should be left up to the legislators. Then if we don't like the results we can vote them out. A commission, on the other hand, is totally out of our reach.
